Choosing Your Interconnection Model

This document exists to provide a starting point on how to implement various Interconnect pieces, organized by use-case.

If You Want You Should Choose
I want to use Network Edge as a router for my Equinix Metal services. Choose a Shared Port or a Dedicated Port for Fabric + Network Edge Device
I want to connect Metal to a 3rd party public cloud VPC (e.g. AWS or GCP) for POC or testing. Choose a Shared Port + Network Edge Device.
I want to connect Metal to a 3rd party public cloud VPC (e.g. AWS or GCP) for Production or more than 10 Gbps of fabric connectivity. Choose a Dedicated Port for Fabric
I want to connect my colocation cage/cabinet to Equinix Metal. Choose a Dedicated Port for Cross Connect (dark-fiber)
I want to connect Equinix Metal to a 3rd party Network Service Provider (NSP) that IS a destination on Fabric. Choose a Shared Port or Dedicated Port for Fabric
I want to connect Metal to a 3rd party NSP that IS NOT a destination on Fabric. Choose Dedicated Port for Cross Connect (dark-fiber)
I want more than 10 Gbps of Fabric connectivity. Choose Dedicated Port for Fabric
I want to show up as a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) on Fabric so that other Equinix customers can make private connections to me. Choose Dedicated Port for Fabric

Common Use-case Summaries

Case 1. Connecting to a Public Cloud Provider (Trial or POC)

  • Start by creating an Edge Device (such as Cisco CSR) via Fabric Portal (if you don't already have one), see the Network Edge Deployment and Configuration Guide for details.
  • Request a new Connection with a Shared Port in the Equinix Metal console.
  • Setup the Edge Device to Metal connection in Fabric portal, selecting Equinix Metal as your “connect to” side (Z-side), and your Edge Device as the “from” side (A-side).
  • Setup the Edge Device to Public Cloud Provider connection in Fabric Portal, select the Public Cloud Provider (for example, AWS) as your “connect to” side (Z-side) and the same Edge Device above as the “from” side (A-side).
  • Complete the networking setups on both Equinix Metal and AWS.

Case 2. Connecting to a Public Cloud Provider (Production or High Throughput)

  • Request a new Connection with a Dedicated Port in the Equinix Metal console.
  • Order a Dedicated Port in the Fabric portal.
  • When the order is completed (may take up to 10 to 15 business days), please verify in the Equinix Metal console that the Port is “Active” and the link state is “Up”.
  • Complete the networking setups on both Metal and the Public Cloud Provider.
  • You may need to set up a sever in Equinix Metal as a switch or router, using open source solutions, such as Pfsense or Vyos.

Case 3. Connecting to my Equinix IBX Colocation Infrastructure

  • Request a new Connection with a Dedicated Port in the Equinix Metal console.
  • Order a Cross-Connect through the Equinix Customer Portal.
  • When the order is completed (may take up to 10 to 15 business days), please verify in the Equinix Metal console that the Port is “Active” and the link state is “Up”.
  • You can then create virtual circuits in the Equinix Metal console and continue your VLAN setups in Equinix Metal and on your colocation switching devices.

Case 4. Connecting to a 3rd-party Networking Service Provider (Destination in Fabric)

  • Request a new Connection with a Dedicated Port in the Equinix Metal console.
  • Order a Dedicated Port in the Fabric portal.
  • Once the Fabric Dedicated Port order is completed, create a connection in Fabric Portal by selecting the Networking Service Provider (NSP) as your “connect to” point (Z-side) and the Port you ordered from Equinix Metal as the “from” point (A-side).
  • You’ll need to then follow the recommendations from the NSP to set up your Layer 2 connections.
