Dedicated Ports

One of your options for Equinix Metal™ connections is through a Dedicated Port, where you are the owner and manager of the physical Equinix Fabric port that handles the traffic. Use this option if:

  • You want to be a Cloud Service Provider on Equinix Fabric so that other Equinix customers can make connections to your hosted service on Equinix Metal.
  • Your connectivity requirements exceed 10 Gbps, or are expected to handle production workloads.
  • You want to connect Metal to a 3rd party public cloud, like AWS or GCP, for production.
  • You are connecting Equinix Metal to your colocated infrastructure in Equinix.
  • You are setting up connections through Cross-Connect.

Dedicated ports support up to a 9000 byte maximum transmission unit (MTU) and jumbo Ethernet frames.

Setting Up a Dedicated Port

Setting up a Dedicated Port has three components:

  • Requesting a Connection in the Equinix Metal console.
  • Equinix Metal will provide a Letter of Authority (LOA).

And

  • Ordering a remote port in the Equinix Fabric portal, where you will upload the LOA.
    Or
  • Ordering a Cross-Connect in the Equinix Customer portal, where you will upload the LOA.

Requesting a Connection

To request a connection in the Equinix Metal portal, open the Connections page from the IPs & Networks tab. If you do not have any connections set up, you should see a landing page. If any projects in your organization already have connections or any open connection requests, you will see a list of those connections on the Connections tab, and a list of requests on the Connection Requests tab.

Click + Request New Connection.

Connection Options

  • Select the location for the new connection from the drop-down.
  • Give a name to your connection.
  • Choose whether you want a redundant connection. If you choose a redundant connection, you get a primary and secondary port to attach two VLANs to, giving you some amount of high availability.

Be sure to check the box next to Dedicated Port.

Click Submit Connection Request to complete the request and submit it to the Equinix Metal support team.

To request a connection through the API, send a POST request to the /projects/{project_id}/connections endpoint.

The required parameters are name, metro, type, redundancy. type should be "dedicated" since you are requesting a dedicated port, and redundancy is either " " or " ". A full parameter list is in the API Reference.

Note that Connections are scoped at the Organization level. Any Connection request in a particular project will be visible to the Organization the project belongs to.

Once your request is submitted, it moves to the Connection Requests tab with the status of Pending.

The Letter of Authority

Support will work behind the scenes to set up the necessary ports for you and send a Letter of Authorization (LOA) to your email address. You'll need to upload the LOA when you order the dedicated port in Fabric Portal or to order the Cross-Connect in the Equinix Customer Portal.

Dedicated Ports - Equinix Fabric

After you have received the LOA from Equinix Metal, you can place an order for your remote port in the Equinix Fabric Portal.

Note: if you are planning on using Cross-Connect, you do not need to order a port through Equinix Fabric, you will order your ports through Cross-Connect and the Equinix Customer Portal.

From the Ports section of the Fabric portal, select Order an Equinix Fabric Port, and from the connection options, select A third party who has a cage in Equinix IBX. The "third party" option in this scenario is the Equinix Metal network-to-network interface (NNI) location.

Select the Location of the remote port. The location you select must be the IBX site specified in your LOA. Please note that the patch panel location for the NNI port specified in the LOA might be in a different location than your Equinix Metal instance, but both will be in the same Metro.

Next, select your Port Configuration options. Your choices for the port configuration are limited by what Equinix Metal supports and how you ordered the port on the Equinix Metal side.

  • For Single vs Redundant, choose the same configuration that you choose on Equinix Metal. So if you choose, redundant, select Two new ports as a redundant pair. LAG ports are not supported.
  • Equinix Metal only supports Dot1Q.
  • Equinix Metal only supports 0x8100 TPID encapsulation.

On the next step, review your Connection Details and upload the LOA provided from Equinix Metal.

Lastly, review the pricing information, and accept the Terms and Conditions. When everything looks right, submit your order.

Monitoring the Ordering Process

Whether you submit an order for your port through Cross-Connect or Equinix Fabric, a work order is created and an IBX technician completes the installation according to the order and LOA. Note for installation: Equinix Metal is configured as the A-side, and Equinix Fabric or your Cross-Connect destination is the Z-side.

When the installation is complete, you will be notified by email of port order completion. You will need to forward the order completion email to support@equinixmetal.com. This step is required. Your order does not proceed unless your forward the completion email to Equinix Metal.

As the final physical configuration step, Equinix Metal completes the the port configuration process on the Equinix Metal hardware side. You will be again notified by email when the set up for the Dedicated Port is complete.

Making Connections

Once your Dedicated Port is physically ready, and the Equinix Metal side shows the Port status is Active and the link status is Up, you are able to set up the virtual connection of the dedicated port in Fabric Portal.

A few things to keep in mind when getting set up:

The Equinix Metal Dedicated Port is the A-side. So if you are using Equinix Fabric, when you set up a connection, select the new Dedicated Port as the A-Side (Origin). If you are using Cross-Connect, whatever is on the other side of your Cross-Connect is the Z-side.

The VLAN identifier on the Equinix Metal side and the Fabric or Cross-Connect side need to match. It also needs to be an integer between 2 - 4094, and unique on the Equinix Metal side. For example, if you are setting up a connection in Equinix Fabric, and assigned 200 as the VLAN ID, you will assign 200 as the NNI VLAN ID on the Equinix Metal side of the connection. Also, this VLAN ID should not be already in use on the Equinix Metal side.

If you choose a dedicated port, then you are able to add multiple virtual circuits to attach multiple VLANs to. While you can have multiple virtual circuits per port, the relationship of virtual circuits to VLANs is 1:1. You can only attach one VLAN to one virtual circuit, and one virtual circuit to one VLAN.

For each virtual circuit, create VLAN in the same location as the connection, if you haven't already. Click Primary Port, and then click Create Virtual Circuit.

Select the VLAN to associate with the virtual circuit. Assign the NNI VLAN ID for the VLAN on the virtual circuit by entering the same VLAN identifier from Fabric or Cross-Connect. Each virtual circuit needs to have a unique NNI VLAN number.

If you chose to provision with a redundant connection, create another VLAN, click Secondary Port, and follow the same steps to create virtual circuits and associate the VLANs with the secondary port.
